So you’ve moved into a new home or house or property. You’re
probably full of plans and hopes for the future…may they all come
true. In the meanwhile, have you considered all the things that need
to be done at a new property?
Security
No matter if the home or house or property is a brand new one or
sold to you by a previous owner, security is of paramount
importance. You should go about ‘personalizing’ your security
arrangements. First of all, have all major locks changed. You have
no idea who might have duplicate keys, and this is a serious risk.
Secondly, make sure that you have at least two spare keys to every
lock. Thirdly, double-check all window catches and latches, and
confirm that their security grilles are firmly in place.
You have probably not thought of investing in a fire extinguisher.
Any home or house or property that uses LP gas for cooking should
not ignore buying one. Fires can break out without warning in any
part of the home or house or property, especially the kitchen (gas),
the bedroom (mosquito coils and unattended irons can ignite
mattresses and bed sheets) and the living room (curtains can catch
fire by a short circuit in the TV or music system). Don’t forget to
check the fuse box. Old fuses and fuse wires can lead to fires and
electrocution, too.
The Setting down Process
Your new residence probably looks perfect to you. The builder or
previous owner has doubtlessly taken some trouble in making the
place comfortable. However, you should go over the entire premises
with a fine tooth comb to check for possible faults and defects.
Owners of new homes often feel that minor repairs can be done at
some later time, and they never get done.
Check the taps in the bathrooms and kitchen and replace their
washers if you find them leaking. If you detect patches of moisture
or discoloration on the ceiling and walls, have someone treat such
areas with a waterproofing compound. If you postpone doing this,
your belongings and the actual structure of your home or house or
property will eventually suffer damage.
Look out for termites. The destruction these little insects (they
look like white ants) can cause on furniture and wooden beams is
slow but permanent. If you find any signs of them around the home or
house or property, call in a pest-control agency and have the
affected areas treated. Not doing this in time can cost you a
fortune in major repairs and replacements later on.
Evaluating Expansion Potential
This is the right time to decide whether your new home or house or
property could be modified in the future. If you see the possibility
of an extra bedroom, make a note of this now and ask a contractor
about the possible costs. Consult with your wife to find out if the
kitchen and Bedroom have enough loft space - if not, you could get
shelves installed.

Getting Neighborly
Of course, your new neighbors will be quite helpful in the process
of your moving in, settling down and feeling at home or house or
property – but it is your job to make the opening moves. You can
break the ice by dropping in on them with a home-cooked dessert or
snack for the entire family. Then introduce yourself and your
family. Explain to them where you are from, what you do for a
living, in which school the kids study, etc. Your spouse and kids
should always be a part of this ritual.
Depending on how you feel about your new neighbors, you could offer
your occasional services as a baby-sister, to lend them your vacuum
cleaner once in a while, or to drop their daughter off at her dance
class on the way to the office. Use your judgment, but
Be helpful and ‘neighborly’. Establishing a good rapport and
relationship with your neighbors early on will usually pay off at
some point in the future.
